Sugar skulls are a feature of Dia de los Muertos, the Day of the Dead, held on November the 1st and 2nd. A Mexican national holiday with influences around the world, the Day of the Dead celebrates and remembers friends and family members passed. The sugar skull, among other gifts, is given as nourishment to the dead. Once the 'spiritual essence' has been consumed it is usually eaten after the celebration by relatives.
