About this Make
Wood engraving is a relief printmaking technique that uses blocks of end-grain wood (as opposed to woodcuts, which use the cross-grain of wood) to create finely detailed prints.
These instructions will show you how to make a simple black and white engraving and print it by hand.
Materials required
An end-grain wood block (boxwood, maple, lemonwood, holly or pear for example)
Engraving tools (a spitsticker, a graver, a tint tool)
A leather sandbag (to rest the block on whilst engraving)
Relief printmaking ink (oil or water based)
A roller
Spatula (for spreading ink)
A sheet of glass or plastic
Smooth white paper (smooth paper takes the impression of the block better than textured paper)
A teaspoon
Drawing ink
Spray fixative (optional)
All of these materials and tools are available from good art shops and online suppliers.

Doing some wood engraving was one of the very few things I really enjoyed in my foundation year (which was back when I think Victoria was still queen.) Your well made tutorial has quite inspired me to think about it again. What fun! x

Great thankyou! Been wondering how to do this..so now will give it a go : )
What a great summary - I want to give this a go now. Brilliant.
I saw some wood engraving prints in a gallery recently & wondered if they were similar to lino prints [which I have done]. Very interesting, thanks, I think I shall have to try it out.
I'm inspired, thank you
You have failed to say how much control is needed to produce a work so detailed. It's a great piece and sooo small!
Very interesting technique. It's great to see what goes into this sort of craft - thanks for sharing.
So wonderful to see such a beautiful craft explained. You make it look easy and I'm pretty sure it isn't!
This is really fascinating - thank you.
Great to see how much skill and work goes into something like this.
