About this Make
Making these beads is simple yet addictive.
My sister once forced me to help her make an entire beaded curtain (!) but you might just want to make necklaces, chokers, bracelets and earrings.
You can use most types of paper and I like to use old catalogues from The Pier and Ikea. When you have made your beads you can paint them with a water based varnish to make them more durable or dip them in glitter glue.
Materials required
- Magazines or wrapping paper
- A knitting needle
- Scissors
- Ruler
- Pen or pencil
- Water based glue

These beads are fab - but if you don't fancy making your own check out the Acholi Beads at www.spoiltrottenbeads.co.uk. I buy them from Uganda where they are made by the Acholi Tribes Women - they make them from paper left over from print runs so they're recycled and their fair trade too and with the money they receive from selling the beads the women send their children to school.

My grandmother taught us to make these when we were little and I was talking about them to my Mum only last week. Thanks for showing them :) A good glaze to try might be Diamond Glaze which I've found very useful for paper things.

My son made these, to decorate a calendar, at primary school. I thought they were lovely. Thanks for reminding me of their appeal. I must have a go.

IAnother variation of this, is to wrap them in metallic or sparkly threads; or wire that has been threaded with beads. They look lovely - I put some on my 'Tranquility Holder'.

I recently took my sister and brother in law Nick to a craft night run by East London Craft Guerilla. Nick said he's just come along for a drink and would not be doing any crafting, then he saw these being made and he got hooked! He made a full set!

Ah, paper beads, I love these! Used to make them all the time, I've got a work sheet somewhere with different styles on. Good make :)
