Hello, my name is Hayley Potter (not Harry Potter). I'm an Illustrator and Writer and I live and work in Wimbledon, London. I've been here since I graduated from the Royal College of Art in 2007. I spend most of my time creating characters, writing and drawing. There is always a story of some kind behind everything I produce. When I'm not in the studio I'm often daydreaming about being in the studio or visiting zoos, exhibitions, the sea, or the countryside for inspiration. I record my ideas, observations and designs in sketchbooks and when its time to create something new I flick through them to help me to decide what to make next. My illustrations are created entirely by hand. I only involve a computer when applying my drawings to a variety of applications including books, cards, prints and textiles. My Secret Creatures models are also created entirely by hand. Even the wood they are painted on is hand turned. If I use something found like a vintage matchbox or a bell to hang around their neck, I always embellish it to make it one of a kind. Here are some things that not many people know about me: I spent a lot of my childhood in Sandwich (the town where the sandwich was invented) I would rather read children's literature than grown up fiction. When I'm not in the studio I'm probably making vegan cupcakes or spending time with other crazy creatives discussing how to take over the world. One day I would like to live in the countryside or by the sea surrounded by llamas, peacocks, Bedlington terriers and ponies.
