About Hobbsy

Hobbsy

Textile Art employing free machine embroidery and appliqué, also a variety of one-off practical textile items.

Hello my name is Wendy; welcome to my Folksy shop - "Hobbsy".

I have always enjoyed making things and in my early teens I started making my own clothes under my Mum’s guidance. As she was also the fabric buyer for a department store I was never at a loss for fabrics! This was probably the start of my obsession with textiles and the resulting stash of material and haberdashery items that I now have - I’ve even still got some 1960’s fabrics!

Following redundancy some years ago I took the opportunity to undertake a BTEC in Textiles, machine embroidery and felt making. Excited by what I’d learned I went on to achieve an FdA in stitched textiles which opened up a whole new variety of techniques and processes for me.

I’m inspired by the natural world, and living in Hampshire I am lucky enough to be near both the coastline and the New Forest providing me with a multitude of ideas. Whilst my work is often triggered by observation I also try to include topical issues. Some of my recent work has looked at two environmental issues, the loss of the bees and the global plastic problem.

For my textile art work I mainly use free machine embroidery, occasionally incorporating appliqué and mixed media to create unique one-off pieces. My work is often representational and detailed in style, but with an occasional humorous twist.

I also like to create a variety of handmade practical items using my own painted/printed textiles, vintage or recycled fabric, or some commercially printed fabrics from my stash. My product range typically includes cosmetic bags, covered sketchbooks/notebooks, cards, keyrings and lavender bags, each featuring either, flowers, trees, bees, or cats.

I also exhibit in local galleries from time to time and take part in craft fairs and open studios within the vicinity.

I hope you enjoy looking at my items as much as I have enjoyed creating them!
