When I was 13 in “Art” I made a long bowl out of slabs of terra cotta and painted a foot in it. It wasn’t great, but I’ve still got it, over 50 years later, glued back together a few times over the years. I spent a lot of my life working in mental health, at some point realising that art and music could show people what was possible, how to transform things, rather than focusing on the problems in their lives. I set up an arts and health organisation called Hoot that is still going, still workings its transformations. My main love over time has been music, and for the past 8 years I’ve run a dance band called Yellow Goose Dance, original songs in Latin, Swing and ballroom styles with a built in dance teacher. It’s a joyous and wonderful thing (Google it). Then a couple of years ago my partner booked me a pottery taster and pretty soon I was hooked. So now I spend lots of time in my cellar, converted into a makeshift pottery studio, messing with clay. I make the usual pottery things that people seem to want - mugs and bowls and plates and things - but I also like to make flower jugs, moon jars, seascape plant pots and trays, vases and a range of oddball, hand painted receptacles with cartoon-like narratives. Mostly I keep these for myself or gifts to friends. I like the yellow goose theme, music, dance, now pottery. What’s not to like?
